4 Treatment Options For Hemorrhoids

4 Treatment Options For Hemorrhoids

Are you among the 5 in 10 Americans with hemorrhoids? Dr. Elvira Klause, a board-certified physician with extensive expertise in hemorrhoid treatment, is committed to helping you find real relief.

We work closely with you to create a personalized treatment plan based on your needs and symptoms.

In most cases, hemorrhoids don't require surgery. Below, we discuss the advanced minimally invasive strategies that can make your life more comfortable.

Rubber band ligation

Rubber band ligation is a nonsurgical option that Dr. Klause performs on an outpatient basis. It's often the go-to solution for internal hemorrhoids (those within the rectum that you can't see from the outside).

During the procedure, Dr. Klause affixes a small rubber band at the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply. This causes the hemorrhoid to shrink. It usually passes in a bowel movement a few days later.

Most people find the procedure comfortable, although it's not unusual to experience fullness or mild discomfort for a short time afterward. This procedure is up to 97% effective.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a sclerosant — a liquid that irritates vein walls. This causes the vein to wither, sending the blood into other healthy vessels in the area.

Sclerotherapy is particularly effective for smaller internal hemorrhoids. As with rubber band ligation, Dr. Klause performs the procedure on an outpatient basis.

Most patients tolerate treatment well, although some pressure during the procedure is normal. Up to 97% of sclerotherapy patients experience good results.

Hemorrhoid energy therapy (HET)

HET is a minimally invasive treatment that uses bipolar radiofrequency energy to effectively treat hemorrhoids. This procedure uses specific low levels of RF energy, which converts to heat upon application.

This coagulates the problem vessels (those delivering blood to the hemorrhoid) and triggers steady withering of the vein. HET is an outpatient procedure. More than 9 in 10 people experience cessation of hemorrhoid bleeding with HET.

Transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD®)

THD is a minimally invasive procedure that uses advanced Doppler imaging to identify problem veins that cause internal hemorrhoids.

Then, Dr. Klause ties off the veins using an absorbable suture, one by one, to cut all the blood sources off.

Without its blood supply, the hemorrhoid shrinks. Although it's more involved than the methods above, THD is still a minimally invasive approach that Dr. Klause performs on an outpatient basis.

HET is quick, typically completed in a single session, and involves minimal discomfort, allowing people to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure. Clinical evidence shows excellent efficacy for hemorrhoids, and it can also treat prolapsed hemorrhoids (internal hemorrhoids that protrude externally.)
