THD® for Hemorrhoids: A Gentler Path to Relief
At her private practice in Laguna Hills, California, board-certified general surgeon Dr. Elvira Klause, MD, FACS, provides the highest standard of care for people in South Orange County struggling with hemorrhoids.
One option that has helped many people find relief with less disruption to their daily lives is transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD®).
This groundbreaking minimally invasive procedure addresses the cause of internal hemorrhoids without the need for major surgery or extended downtime.
Here’s what you should know about THD.
Understanding THD
THD, while technically a hemorrhoid surgery, is non-excisional, which means Dr. Klause doesn’t remove the hemorrhoids. Instead, she uses advanced imaging (Doppler) technology to identify which artery is supplying blood to the hemorrhoids.
Then, she ligates (ties off) the hemorrhoids using sutures. This prevents blood flow to the hemorrhoids, which then wither and shrink over time. As the hemorrhoids shrink, symptoms abate.
Who might need THD for hemorrhoids
THD is for internal hemorrhoids — swollen veins inside the rectum — that cause discomfort or pain. According to THD Labs, the makers of the THD system, clinical evidence supports the use of THD for all grades of hemorrhoids. Those grades include:
- Grade 1: Fully inside the anal canal; may cause bleeding and itching
- Grade 2: Push outside the anal canal during bowel movements, but retract after
- Grade 3: Must push prolapsed hemorrhoids back in after bowel movements
- Grade 4: Prolapsed hemorrhoid, which has become permanently external
While THD is only for internal hemorrhoids, you still may be able to receive treatment for stage 4 hemorrhoids that are prolapsed. Dr. Klause can perform the procedure in combination with a mucopexy. During mucopexy, she sutures the prolapsed tissue back into its proper position without removing the hemorrhoid.
However, in some cases, Dr. Klause may recommend another approach for more severe hemorrhoids, which may involve surgical removal.
The benefits of THD
Because the procedure uses advanced techniques and doesn’t require tissue removal, THD is far less invasive than traditional surgical hemorrhoid removal. This offers benefits including:
- Shorter outpatient procedure
- Less pain
- Faster recovery
- Resume most normal activities within just one or two days
Dr. Klause provides specific, customized recommendations to help ease your recovery and get you back to a comfortable life quickly. In most cases, you’ll need to avoid heavy lifting (anything over 10 pounds) until Dr. Klause gives you the go-ahead at your follow-up visit.
In addition, she recommends personalized strategies to help you avoid hemorrhoid recurrence, such as eating more fiber, avoiding straining during bowel movements, gentle wiping, and drinking plenty of water.
If you’re dealing with irritating bleeding and itching from internal hemorrhoids, THD could be the procedure that gives you lasting relief.
